The Story Behind the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel

The Liberty Head Nickel was officially minted from 1883 to 1912. In 1913, the U.S. Mint switched to the Buffalo Nickel, yet five Liberty Head Nickels mysteriously appeared. They were likely struck illegally by Philadelphia Mint employee Samuel Brown.

          Why It’s Rare

          • Unauthorized Issue: No 1913 Liberty Nickels were officially authorized, making them “patterns” or clandestine strikes.
          • Only Five Exist: All five surviving coins are named and tracked (e.g., “Elvis Specimen”).

          ⚠️Note⚠️
